Sam

The lazy afternoon sun shone down from the clear blue sky, the wind gently whispered in the trees and bushes, the faint aroma of mown grass drifted across the parking lot. The weather was simply perfect, but Sam didn't care. He didn't notice.  Instead his head pounded from a severe headache, his eyes were red and watering, and the gentle breeze only made them sting. He suppressed a sniffle and unlocked his car, throwing himself limply into the driver's seat. He sat there, hands on the wheel, until finally he couldn't take it anymore.  The tears came freely. Tears of pain, tears of sadness. His girlfriend who he had been with for the last 3 years had simply left him. She had just called him at work and said "I'm going, don't bother trying again. We both need someone new in our lives". She hadn't even spoken to him face to face. She hadn't even bothered to say anything. The tears stained his shirt and he tried to wipe them away from his eyes with the back of his hand. Now he was stuck in this dead end office job. Every day made him feel like he was dying a little more inside and there was nothing he could do. Nowhere he could go. His head was hot and he felt like it was throbbing with pain. He put his head down on the wheel and cried. Nowhere he could go. Slowly he stopped himself and looked down at his right hand. Clutched in his grasp were his car keys. He stopped himself crying and sat up. Starting up the car he placed his hands on the wheel and looked about. Nowhere he could go?

The motorway miles blurred together without end. Sam felt like he was running. Running from what he had been, what he had done. He had to try and forget somehow. An exit came up and he took it. He didn't have a clue where he was. A roads turned into B roads which turned into tracks of gravel and mud as Sam realised he was now well and truly lost. The sun had now dipped away behind the horizon and everything was quickly becoming dark. He flicked on the lights, but as soon as he did he noticed the fuel gauge. Almost immediately after the car coughed, spluttered, then died. No fuel. No idea of where he was. He got out, and could see nothing. The darkness stretched on forever. He could hear the whispering of trees though and guessed he was somewhere near a forest. Either way, there was no way of getting out of here. Not tonight at least. And so he decided to bed down in his car for the night.  He folded a few seats down and tried to sleep, but it did not come easily.

The next morning Sam sat up in the driver's seat, having had very little sleep the night before. He found himself getting out and examining where he was. The gravel track just ended where he was stood, any further on and he would have just been driving into thick woods that completely surrounded him. There were no sign of buildings, no sign of civilisation, not even any telegraph or power lines strung overhead beside the road. Where on earth was he? How the heck would he be able to get out of here? Sam wandered up off of the gravel track onto the grass. Maybe, he decided, there might be someone beyond this thick bunch of trees. There might be someone or something he could get a bearing off of to try and work out where he was. And so he began to walk, quickly disappearing into the shadowy depths of the forest. At the same time the sun began to climb behind him, and the gentle breeze began to whisper once again.
Breaking free of a thicket of trees Sam found himself in a beautiful lush green meadow, surrounded by trees of all shapes and sizes. Blossom drifted on the breeze and the shifting leaves of trees winked down at him. The sun had climbed very quickly, and now sat overhead, filling the scene with warmth and illuminating all the colours in their full glory. "wow…" Sam breathed. What a place. So beautiful, so untouched. He hadn't come across anything that could help him identify where he was, and he was tired from walking. And so he decided to take a well-earned lie down in the meadow. The grass was long and soft, so soft in fact it felt like lying on a big duvet. The gentle whispering of the breeze blowing through the trees filled his ears, the sun in its blue sky hovered above him, warming him. The faint smell of flowers of all colours and types and sizes filled his nostrils. He closed his eyes and laid back. Surely this place was heaven, or as close as he could ever come. He smiled to himself. A little voice inside him said "wouldn't you like to stay here, forever". He opened his eyes as blossom drifted by on the wind. Yes he would. He took off his horrible, clumsy shoes and felt the grass on his feet, between his toes. Smiling again he closed his eyes and laid back on the soft green pillow. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to him, something was changing.

His toenails and fingernails, one by one began to turn black. They became hard and thick, growing as they did so. He felt nothing but the touch of the grass and the warmth of the sun. Slowly, ever so slowly, they began to fuse together, one by one, until his fingers where all one, minus a gap in the middle, and were all covered in the black nail. Carefully they began to re-shape themselves. The tough black nail stretched right around and into the gap between what had been his middle and ring finger, slowly becoming more and more like a cloven hoof. He still didn't notice a thing as his hands and feet became more and more like hooves. Finally when they were finished fine brown hairs began to appear all over them, then working their way up his arms and legs. Hair thickened to become fur. Beautiful soft rich brown fur. It quickly covered his arms and legs, then worked its way under his back. Sam felt a slight tickle as it did so, but then sighed with pleasure as it felt like he was now lying on velvet, thick and soft. As the fur continued to work its way around him his ears suddenly started moving upwards. They climbed right up his head, and then stopped. Slowly and gently they twisted and began to grow up and away from his head. As if they were plasticine being shaped by unseen hands they slowly pulled out, and then grew large and oval shaped. As soon as they were finished the fur covered them too. The outside was enveloped  in soft brown fur whilst inside the ears lighter coloured hairs began to sprout. Sam sighed with pleasure and felt the grass tickle the gap in his cloven hooves. Despite never having felt the experience before he grinned even more, it felt lovely. The fur was now all over his chest and quickly reached his neck. Slowly this began to pull out, elongating away from his shoulders. It felt warm as the fur swept over this new part of his body. His eyes where still closed, but were they open, then he would have seen the fantastic fur markings now covering his body. Browns and whites and everything in between, with speckled dots down his sides. His shirt, tie, trousers, shoes and jacket had all simply disappeared into the earth. His pants, the last thing keeping his from being completely naked, seemed to just shatter, then blow away of the wind as blossom. He lay there now completely naked, halfway between a man, and a beautiful male deer. As if to re-affirm this two stubby lumps of bone began to push their way out of the top of his head. Slowly they grew up, then exploded out like the branches of a tree, rising high and graciously above him.  The changes weren't slow now, they had sped up, as if the unseen designer was suddenly struck with creative thoughts and wanted to finish the piece before they could be forgotten. Rear legs changed from normal human joints, to unguligrade type joints. Front legs extended skyward so that this new deer would be able to walk on all four of its beautiful cloven hooves. Then the changes focused on the head. Hair grew back shorter to become fur, teeth re-arranged themselves and changed to become more suited to a herbivores needs and behind closed eyelids the eyes became bigger and changed to a shiny black. Then suddenly the nose and mouth took off together, pulling right out into a muzzle. The eyes were pushed aside a little as this whole new face took shape. A long muzzle and mouth, a large black nose. Then fur cascaded over everything  and the transformation was complete. Minus one little detail however. This new deer rolled over onto its side, as if slowly pushed by an invisible hand. Then, a little tuft of fur began to grow out above its rear, pulling out into a tail. Standing tall and priapic it wiggled a little with the deer's rear end and then stopped. The deer had to sleep, he was exhausted from the change.

A few hours later Sam woke up. A smile appeared on the end of his muzzle as he looked up the beautiful blue sky. Slowly he turned himself over and pushed himself up on all fours. He didn't wobble or waver, it felt like he had been like this his whole life. Looking back at his sleek legs and graceful curves, all covered with his beautiful soft fur in its fantastic pattern he felt a warmth of pride inside him. He was the finest buck in the forest. Suddenly he thought he heard the calls of another deer far off in the distance, his ears swung this way and that to find out the source. Again he heard it. Swinging his head found, his majestic antlers like a crown above him, he knew where the call was coming from. Quickly he bounded off, as graceful and fast as any other of his kind, through the trees. But then he stopped and looked back at the meadow.

Thank you, he thought to himself. Enjoy, came the response.
